The backing post is made of brass. It is nickel-free and 18k gold plated.
If you have sensitive ears, I recommend purchasing earring sleeves. They are reusable and slide over any post. The "sleeves" are comfortable - I wear mine all the time :-) They also are unnoticeable. See other listing to purchase sleeves.
